Two years ago Common released his most highest charting album "BE" to
the masses. It was short, sweet, insightful, and hailed a classic by
many. He returns with his "Premo" Kanye West on production for
majority of the album for a attempt out do "BE". The end result is
exactly what you would expect growth, soulful beats, are better than
most, but not Mr. Can I Borrow a Dollar's best. Common shines in this
album by telling you what he all ready told you time and time again
just in a different way. From the socially conscious lyrics about
inner city living in "Misunderstood", to trying too hard too be
something you're not in "Driving Me Wild", callin out so called
ballers in "Southside", boasting about his skills in "Start The Show"
and "The Game", and of course the love ballads in "I Want You" and "So
Far To Go". Common's storytelling is still supurb as always a good
example of this would be from "Break My Heart" where he tells of his
relationship problems.
"it was a dream day/met her on Spring Break/look like the type that be
like no habla ingles/she said you look like you rap, where's your
bling-ay/and your clothes are tight but you don't seem gay/I said naw
that's dude from N-Sync-ay/she wasn't married, kept a ring on her
pink-ay/she said you know I don't be dating rappers/I said I got my
Sag card, baby I'm an actor"
Not his best lines lyrically, but with the Kanye looped sample that
will have you singing the hook in your sleep. Kanye must have
channeled the ghost of Dilla with his chopped up samples and vocals in
"Break My Heart" and same goes for his understudy Devo Springsteen on
the Nina Simone sampled "Misunderstood".
Common still has enough sense when choosing his beats for a album that
flows seemlessly, effortlessly, and ends it with a message from his
"Pops" telling the engineers that he dont need no cue cards then going
on to tell us about forever.
